The Gilded Doors at New York City Center
130 W 56th St
Challenge: Recreating a Lost Craft
At 130 W 56th St, the entrance to New York City Center’s stage was framed by stunning polished brass doors—an architectural statement of the venue’s grandeur.
However, as time wore on, the original doors required replacement, and a new challenge emerged: the technology once used for polished brass cladding was no longer available.
To restore this iconic entrance without compromising authenticity, Highline Integrated Security Systems was entrusted with designing and fabricating a historically accurate replica. Every detail had to match the original, from the material finish to the intricate hardware, ensuring the new doors blended seamlessly with the building’s timeless elegance.
Solution: Precision Craftsmanship & Historic Preservation
Highline Integrated Security Systems approached the project with a commitment to both historical accuracy and long-term durability.
- Custom Brass Fabrication: With no modern equivalent for brass cladding, each door and frame was meticulously handmade from individual brass pieces, ensuring an exact match to the original design.
- Replica Stage Doors: Designed using historical references to maintain visual continuity with the existing architecture.
- CAD & Elevation Drawings: Developed precise CAD renderings to guide fabrication and replicate the intricate details of the original brasswork.
- Hardware Installation: Outfitted the new doors with ball-bearing hinges, LCN door closers, HD mortise locks, and astragal seals, ensuring both functionality and longevity.
Results: A Perfectly Restored Entrance
By combining modern engineering with traditional craftsmanship, Highline Integrated Security Systems successfully recreated a set of stage doors that are both historically accurate and built to last.
- Handmade brass doors match the originals in every detail, preserving the building’s architectural heritage.
- Durable, high-quality construction ensures the doors will withstand decades of use.
- The venue’s iconic entrance is restored with precision, honoring New York City Center’s legacy.
